Barrie HenriquesBallyhale Shamrocks made the Special Junior A League semi-finals via merited success against Thomastown.

The standard in a highly competitive tie, played last Friday evening at beautifully appointed Grennan, was commendable. If the visitors’ late flurry ― a free augmented in added time by Michael Carroll and Liam Grant ― did the hosts some disservice on the margin, the more consistent side won. This contest was defined by its two goals. Ballyhale had much the better of early exchanges but a series of wides allowed an economical Thomastown parity at 0-4 apiece on 25 minutes when Pádraig Caulfield pointed.

Shamrocks survive late rally and Bag’ points

Barrie HenriquesAlthough a late rally on home turf by Erin’s Own of Bagenalstown cut the margin to the minimum, Ballyhale Shamrocks deserved to win this Special Junior League tie. Largely, they played the more constructive hurling but nearly got caught through not etching periods of dominance on the scoreboard.

Again, conditions were bright and breezy (and initially to the hosts’ advantage). The visitors survived an uncertain start, not scoring until the tenth minute via an Enda Fitzpatrick free. Stephen Donnelly quickly augmented.

Ballyhale Shamrocks 2-15 Fenians 1-9

BALLYHALE Shamrocks cruised to an easy victory and were always in control against wasteful Fenians (Johnstown), who shot 14 wides, in this senior hurling league clash at cold but sunny Nowlan Park.
