Ballinkillen 2-12, Tullogher Rosbercon 0-6
Carlow side, Ballinkillen stepped up considerably on their performance the previous week against Mullinavat when taking care of the Tullogher challenge in bitterly cold Brownstown on Saturday evening last.
To say that their victory was an easy comfortable ride to the winning post would be to misrepresent the facts. Sure they won by 2-6, but there were times during the opening half, when favoured by the cutting wind when they really were at variance with the location of the Tullogher goal posts. They drove eleven wides in that first half, and one wondered if the wires were actually uncrossed on their sights. Having driven seven wides in the first 12 minutes, they eventually got into the cockpit in the 13th minute when Martin Dalton crashed home their opening score, a goal.
Tullogher could only manage four points in a dismal first half, to which Ballinkillen eventually answered with 1-7.
The Dalton brothers, Martin and Darren were hugely active all over the Tullogher defence. Their superior pace burned the Tullogher defence on numerous occasions. They underlined their speed with some great score-getting. Their efforts were augmented by an impeccable display of free-taking by David English, who came out of the game with a very creditable six points.
The winners were exceptionally strong at midfield where English and Craig wall dominated, while the Kinsella brothers, Lauren and James made life very hard on the many Tullogher forwards that came their way.
The second Ballinkillen goal was clattered home by substitute, Frankie Dowling, who never hesitated as the chance presented itself in the 54th minute.
