Ten point Coady shoots the ’Lockes to victory

John Lockes 0-17 Conahy Shamrocks 0-13

THE third round clash in the Intermediate Hurling League ended with big-hearted John Lockes (Callan) claiming their second victory in front of a good attendance in Tullaroan. The star of the show for the winners was P.J. Coady, who scored 10 of their points.

As soon as referee, Maurice Flynn, threw-in the ball Conahy showed a serious attitude, but they failed to back up appearances with action. Ten seconds in Peter Vickery (C) opened the scoring. The ’Lockes replied when P.J. Coady pointed a free.

Callan drove on with a point from John O’Neill. Great combination play by Conahy saw Gary Kavanagh set up Micheal Lawlor for a good score. P.J. Coady responded again to ease the Callan side ahead.

The Conahy half forward line continued to perform well. Declan Buggy scored a point to keep things ticking over. Another P.J. Coady converted free kept John Lockes in the lead.

Conahy briefly got themselves in front thanks to scores from midfielder David Healy and half forward Alan Healy but those were the last scores that Conahy got in normal time of the first half.

The closing 10 minutes of the half were dominated by the opposition. A free from Simon Burke put the ’Lockes ahead. Shane Bergin got on to the scoresheet as well with a point from the right wing.

With the end of normal time in sight two frees from P.J. Coady sent the winners four clear. Conahy pulled back in injury-time point by Gavin Nolan to give them a ray of hope heading into the dressing rooms.

The half-time score was Conahy 0-6, John Lockes 0-9.

The second half opened much as the first half had closed. John Lockes were dominant. Shane Bergin picked off a point within a minute and P.J. Coady added another to it quickly.

Barry Murphy appeared to have pulled one back for Conahy, but the umpires flag remained down. After consultation with the referee a point was awarded. Simon Burke restored John Lockes five point advantage when hitting the target from the right wing.

Another point for Paddy Kennedy stretched the lead out to six points.

Conahy mounted a counter charge towards the middle of the half, scoring four points without a reply. Kieran Mooney opened this blast for Conahy with a 65. Alan Healy grabbed two points from the play and Micheal Lawlor brought Conahy within two points of the opposition when he scored.

A free from the half way line into the wind by P.J. Coady settled the ’Lockes. Peter Vickery got a point for Conahy and with eight minutes to go it was a two point game.

Conahy came within a single point after Kieran Mooney scored a free from the half way. But two smart frees for P.J. Coady put the game beyond losers. A final score from Dan McCormack wrapped up the spoils for the winners.
