Slieverue 3-12, Windgap 2-12.
A single puck of a ball was the difference between these two sides who battled very hard to bag the two League points on offer in Windgap on Saturday afternoon, and on mature reflection, it could be justified that the visitors to Windgap just about deserved to shade a game that ebbed between captivating and very ordinary.
Slieverue set a blistering pace from the off, and by the halfway mark of the first half, they led by 1-6 to 0-3--- and they were playing against the testing breeze. Their goal resulted from a lack of concentration in the Windgap defending. A Slieverue attack was beaten back by Paul Mc.Kenna, the Windgap custodian, but Martin Knox was quickest of all to slip the rebound over the line. That happened in the 11th minute, and Slieverue added points by Paul Rockett and Martin Knox, before Cian Ryan halted the onslaught. Ryan with a brace of points, one from a free, and William Phelan with a whopper from ninety yards reduced the advantage to a manageable four points by the 22nd minute, but then Gavin Quilty with two good points of his own stretched the advantage back out to six points. Windgap’s first half goal arrived in the 27th minute when Pauric Walsh cleverly slipped home a rebounded shot to narrow the gap to two points. Martin Knox added a single to the Slieverue score before the break to leave the game reading, Slieverue 1-9, Windgap 1-6.
Two goals by Paul Rockett between the 38th and 44th minutes practically trebled the Slieverue advantage by the 45th minute. But Windgap came battling back, and by the 58th minute the home side had reduced the deficit to a single goal, thanks in the main to another Pauric Walsh goal, and points by Michael Power, and Alan Hearne.
Slieverue had tremendous warriors in Kieran Dowling, Paul Rockett, Dylan Habberlin, Gavin Quilty, and Alan Atkins.
Windgap, who lined out with eight minor players were well served by PJ.Barron, Pa Moore, Paudie Bacon, Cian Ryan and the ever alert Pauric Walsh.
A decent encounter, with the winners earning their first brace of points, which they probably feel they earned.
