Muckalee 2-10 James Stephens 1-9
Muckalee made it 4 titles in a row when they had a 4 point win over a game James Stephens team in the J J Kavanagh & Sons County Football Final played before a large crowd in Freshford on Sunday. However, they needed a Colin Mc Grath penalty in injury time to eventually see off a spirited city side. Muckalee seemed to be in a very strong position at the break when they lead 1-5 to 0-5 having played against the strong wind. However they failed to press home the advantage and were still only a goal ahead with 10 minutes remaining 1-8 to 0-8. Then in the 53rd minute an Eoin Mc Cormack goal turned this game on its head and James stephens hit the front for the very first time. Colin Mc Grath, who scored 1-6 for his side, levelled the game a minute later before the same player added the crucial goal from the penalty in injury time to eventually deny the Village lads. Muckalee will now represent Kilkenny in the Leinster Intermediate Championship where they will be away to the winners of Longford or Wexford on 3rd Nov. Kilkenny Footballers 3 week adventure in the British Inter County Football Championship came to an end on Saturday when an injury time goal from Scotland denied the team a semi-final spot. This was new territory for the football team and when they look back on the campaign they will see that they are very competitive at this level and the players are very disappointed at not going further in the competition. However, a good win over Hertfordshire, a one point defeat to Lancashire and a two point defeat to Scotland has laid the foundation for better times ahead. Another great spin off has been the bonding in the panel following three weekends of travel as a group. Kilkenny GAA are very indebted to GAA Britain for accomodating the team in the competition and we look forward to being involved again in the future. We wish the team and management every success this weekend
Whilst the main focus was on our hurlers in O'Connor Park this weekend Kilkenny Footballers were playing "Three in a Row" chasing Lancashire in the British inter County Junior Football Championship in Birmingham. Kilkenny had a great win over Hertfordhire on the previoius weekend but there was no doubt that this game was going to be a step up. They got off to a flyer with John Mulhall goaling in the first five minutes. They enjoyed a 1-4 to 0-3 half time lead but were desperately defending their slim lead as Lancashire threw everything at them in the second half. They surrendered the lead for the first time with only 2 minutes remaining. Final Score Lancashire 0-9 Kilkenny 1-5. Kilkenny now travel to Edinbugrh next weekend to take on Scotland.
On a weekend where probably most eyes will be on O Connor Park Tullamore we would like to wish the very best of luck to our Football team as they travel again to the UK to take on Lancashire in the British Inter County Junior Football Championship. This will be probably be a step up from last weekend's game as Lancashire have won this competition in 2011 and 2012 and are going for a "Three in a Row".
