The opening quarter in this game proved crucial as Emeralds raced into a 1-6 to 0-0 lead. After 20 mins the lead was out to 2-6 to 0-1 and the writing was on the wall for the Dunnamaggin side. However they steadied the ship somewhat coming up to half-time and faced into the second half 7 points in arrears 2-7 to 1-3. Halfway through the second half the lead was 9 points but a strong finish from the south champions saw them narrow the gap to 4 with 5 minutes to go. Meanwhile in the South Thomastown were crowned u21 A champions following a terrific game with Glenmore on a final scoreline of 0-19 to 2-8. They now meet the winners of the North Final between Dicksboro and Bennettsbridge. The North Final will be played on weekend 3/4 January with the County Final on the following weekend. The Under 21 Grade continued to provide excellent end of season fare at Nowlan Park on Sunday when Mullinavat and Bennettsbridge landed the J J Kavanagh & Sons Under 21 A and B titles respectively. In the opening game Bennettsbridge eventually saw off a strong second half challenge from Dunnamaggin to capture the B County Title which is sure to make up for disappointments at other grades earlier.
The A Final was a superb game with the result in doubt right up to the final minute. In fact a draw looked the likely outcome as O'Loughlin Gaels sought an equalising point as time ran out. The J J Kavanagh and Sons Under 21 Hurling Championship continues to provide fantastic entertainment as we head towards the end of the year. Mullinavat and Glenmore could not be separated in the Southern A Final in Carrigeen finishing Mullinavat 2-15 Glenmore 0-21 after extra time. In the North semi's Erins Own and O'Loughlin Gaels qualified to meet in the A Final next weekend. John Lockes had a 2 point win over Ballyhale Shamrocks in the A shield and will meet the Rower Inistioge in the Shield Final. Dunnamaggin won the South B Championship with a 1-12 to 1-6 win over Kilmacow. Meanwhile Bennettsbridge won the Northern B title with a 1-16 to 0-10 win over Tullaroan. The eagerly awaited 2012 JJ Kavanagh & Sons sponsored Under 21A Hurling Final between Mullinavat and Saint Lactains goes ahead this coming Sunday in St Johns Park Kilkenny with a 2pm throw in. The Mullinavat side had a hugely impressive victory over Mooncoin in the Southern Final recently and will be hoping that they can take that form into the county final on Sunday. St Lactains have put up impressive scorelines in their wins over Erins Own, O'Loughlin Gaels and a fancied Lisdowney side in the North Final. With the resumption of the Inter County scene just around the corner this is an ideal occasion for Kilkenny supporters to kick start the season in a grade that always produces great hurling fare.
